LOCATION

The Avenue forms part of a delightful rural area comprising the large parish of Bucklebury and Marlston and is scattered over several miles of common in an area of ‘Outstanding Natural Beauty’ on the high ground between Newbury and Reading. The original oak trees which line The Avenue are believed to have been planted to commemorate a visit by Queen Elizabeth 1st to the local Manor, owned by Lord Bolingbroke. More trees were planted in the 18th century and yet another row was added to celebrate victory at Trafalgar by Admiral Nelson.

Dotted around the common are many examples of beautiful Tudor cottages and farmhouses, tucked away amongst the trees and common land. Bucklebury claims to have more footpaths than any other parish in England.

At Chapel Row, which historically was the scene for old country fairs, there is a butcher’s shop, a post office cum general stores and the Blade Bone Inn.

The whole of this ancient parish teems with history, legend and natural beauty with many places of interest.

There are good road communications providing easy access to Newbury, Reading and the M4 motorway at Theale (junction 12). For rail commuters there are mainline stations at Theale and Pangbourne with fast services up to London (Paddington) in well under the hour.
