The original building was built to the design of John Giles the architect of the Langham Hotel in Central London. It was founded as Leavesden Hospital.

Originally on a 143-acre site in the parish of Leavesden on the outskirts of Abbots Langley, the site was purchase din 1867. The building foundation stone was laid in October 1868 by Dr William Brewer, Chairman of the Metropolitan Asylums Board.

Back then the build had cost about £145,000 to build and furnish. It comprised of administration block containing offices, kitchen, storeroom, workshops and staff quarters. On either side of those were the ward blocks - male son one side and females on the other.

The Leavesden Hospital closed around 1995. It was then subject to renovation and conversion into 63 apartments in around 2004.
